Mobile Backhaul

The rapidly increased use of mobile data services has forced many mobile operators to invest in network infrastructure to remain competitive and minimize subscriber churn. Data traffic now requires more bandwidth than voice services on operator networks, stressing existing backhaul connections.  As a result, there is a need to migrate mobile backhaul. Telco Systems provides innovative mobile backhaul solutions to help mobile operators handle this data surge.
Telco Systems’ solutions offer a smooth migration path to packet-based mobile backhaul by supporting multiple technologies such as circuit emulation services (CES), 1588v2, SyncE, OAM (Y.1731, Y.1564, RFC2544), and Hierarchical quality of service (HQoS). By offering Carrier Ethernet and MPLS to the cell site, we future-proof mobile operators’ and backhaul wholesale providers’ networks to reduce spending on OPEX and CAPEX.

K-PowerNet Chooses Telco Systems for Mobile Backhaul Deployment
The evolution of mobile network technology to LTE and LTE Advanced, together with the deployment of new RAN solutions, such as small cells,
is forcing operators to rethink their mobile backhaul solutions. Efficiently managing data services on the backhaul network is creating
new challenges:

  • Assured SLAs – mobile operators are demanding backhaul solutions in order to offer committed service level agreements (SLAs) and provide real-time reporting to assure SLAs are being met. Thus, providers must implement OAM methods to report on network performance, including delay, jitter and packet loss, throughout their network.
  • Synchronization – synchronization is extremely important for healthy, operational, mobile networks. Different operators’ cell site equipment supports different synchronization schemes. Mobile backhaul solutions need to support all synchronization options (SynchE, IEEE1588v2, BITs) to allow support for different implementations.
  • Scalability – as the network grows with more mobile cells (including new small cell technologies), scalability can become a limiting factor in the use of L2 Ethernet E-Line, E-Tree, E-LAN or E-Access services, as large numbers of cells may become difficult to manage and maintain.
  • Seamless migration path – mobile networks often combine multiple technology generations including 2G, 3G and 4G, which may co-exist in the same cell or in different cells. Any backhaul solution that is selected must offer a seamless migration path from TDM to packet-based transport, as well as support the transport of TDM over the packet network.
Telco Systems provides innovative mobile backhaul solutions to help mobile operators handle the surge of traffic from new data services. Our solutions offer:

  • Built-in Ethernet and MPLS transport on the same platforms with ‘license free’ MPLS availability to future proof your network with no additional cost to upgrade to MPLS.
  • MPLS to the edge, which increases scalability, enables traffic engineering, and provides additional security and resiliency. MPLS delivers intelligence to the cell site to offload expensive core resources.
  • Standard end-to-end hardware-based OAM (EFM, CFM, Y.1731, Y.1564, RFC2544) across multi-vendor environments, per service, enables providers to monitor, manage and guarantee SLAs.
  • True HQoS using bandwidth profiles with a hierarchal scheduler – shaping, and policing assures the ability to offer a variety of services to meet customer needs.
  • Multiple resiliency mechanisms, such as xSTP, LAG, FRR, G.8031 and G.8032, that meet sub-50ms restoration requirements.
  • Extended temperature and small footprint to support uncontrolled and small environment applications
  • Standards-based for multi-vendor interoperability
  • Time synchronization (SynchE, 1588v2) and CES for seamless legacy service migration.

Value Proposition

  • Multiple synchronization options with any-to-any sync interworking.
  • Migration to packet-based backhaul while maintaining existing TDM services
  • Wire-speed traffic management with exceptional granularity in differentiating services
  • Assured end-to-end services over Ethernet and MPLS
  • Zero-touch provisioning to ease network deployment and training burdens
  • Network resiliency with sub 50mS protection switching
  • Extended temperature for uncontrolled environment applications
  • Standards-based for multi-vendor interoperability
  • Service Management – provision, monitor, maintain and optimize services
